Additionally, Shurat HaDin is launching legal proceedings in Israel to access the database of around 140,000 Holocaust survivors and their descendants who have listed more than two million assets under Israel’s Project Heart between 2011 and 2014. The Israeli government, in coordination with the Jewish Agency for Israel, invited applicants into the restitution scheme, however, the program was abruptly shut down and the participants who had signed up were left in an uncertain position.
Shurat HaDin contacted the government for clarification however, she was unable to get a response. However, Israel’s Labour and Social Services Ministry stated that Project Heart was never intended as a single claims scheme and therefore, the information of claimants cannot be released. She stated that Project Last Chance is taking a different approach to the Claims Conference, established in 1951, which has petitioned governments to grant Holocaust restitution, rather than focusing on companies and businesses directly.
